Tote Bag # 10 (Tote bag side stitching)

Tote Bag #10 (Tote bag side stitching)

To share idea and challenges when stitching side for a tote bag by using cross stitching technique.

** Note:- this project is related to post Tote Bag # 10 (Tote bag handle).

The inner "hard" support need to remove to allow easier access when doing side stitching for tote bag.

As the hard support make part makes it difficult to performing cross stitching. Another reason need to move the supporting strap layer for the side. It also restrictive lack "space" for hand stitching the side.

Use a sharp knife to remove thread between the support board layer, tote bag layer and hook padding layer.

Have to pay close attention when perform this work.

Slowly cut the thread holding support board layer, tote bag layer and handle padding layer.

Use a very sharp knife to perform this work

Use a sharp tweeter to remove cut thread from the handle padding.
It will help when re stitch process at later time to reassemble.

Draw line in preparation to punch 5 mm spacing hole with 3 mm straight line along edge

Tips:- it better to temporary hold both side edge and use 5 mm punch.

Use paper clip to hold both side in place when apply glue to edge. Same goes to bottom part. See photo below

Align support strap against the bag edge to check for proper alignment on punch hole to match.

The punch hole need to remove unwanted waste to ensure the cutter point are cleared and waste can discard.
It ensure a smooth and clean cutting action by punch hole.

I use broken needle as a tool for this purpose.
Tips:- for waste got stuck inside punch , use small drill bits carefully to remove it.

Use a needle to align the punch hole to inside support strip against the bag edge .
The supporting strap is fasten temporary with thread, once the final thread are stitch then remove this temporary thread . This will help you in better control bag shape and make stitching easier.

Temporary stitching thread to hold the side in place and proper position on punch hole,.

The overlap end piece are fold up to counter check the position to punch hole relative to the bag edge holes.

Tools for punch hole for support strap

Use light to check on hole alignment for stitch hole to match.

This step help to minimize stitching thread can pass thru.

Trim the edge with knife and reduce the thickness. As this section is to wrap over top edge of tote bag and cover expose part.

Use a stitch pony to support tote bag up side down, then temporary stitch the bottom side to minimize movement.
Use awl to check first hole hole alignment. When wrapping the section it is recommended to use awl tips to re align the punch hole with the supporting strip.

Tips:- for this cross the stitching, the length for thread is about 5.5 to 6.0 time the distance to stitch using 5 mm punch spacing. The punch hole is about 3 mm from the edge.

The first hole is loop twice thread it is  to provide strong tension and holding strength.

Rear inside view for support strap, see the thread layout

To assist cross stitching it helps to support bag position.

This example is use a string with clip to hold it upright position.

Remove the temporary thread as progress with cross stitch.

Tips the temporary thread to help keep both layer in position to make stitching easier work

How to check tension on cross stitching by pulling both thread gently.
Another way is you can observe the edge of the material do it smooth or uneven.

Once this side is done the same apply to the other side
