(26th June 17)In any hobby there are various type of tool / equipment is required and so the challenge is what type of tool to buy to start a leather craft hobby? That is a very big question for those who have no basic idea and not sure how to start off and goes about it.
As for those new to this hobby it can be very confusing , time consuming , numerous reading materials to read, try and error effort and at time frustrating if you are first timer. What to do next and how to start off as soon as possible.
There are a few basic tool to acquire for leather craft, please bear with me as there is no hard and fast rule to follow on what tool to acquire first. However in any leather craft tool they are need to be sharp, clean cut, with pointed part hence safety first is one area you need to always keep in mind.
So many type of cutting tool on the market and each have it pro and con. Let start off with punch hole tool for leather.
Always keep in mind we are learning as each type of punch
design have it specific intended purpose and use / application. It is about
sharing best practice for beginner and first timer as it can be expensive. Buying
tool can be real challenge if you have limited knowledge on what tools or
equipment is required as beginner.

How To Punch Holes In
Leather
You
can use a rotary punch or a punch you hit with a hammer. I find the rotary punch great if you just
need to grab a punch for the odd hole.
It seems to work best if a piece of scrap leather is put under your
leather piece as a cutting pad as opposed to grinding the cutting tube into the
metal anvil on the rotary punch. Using a
piece of scrap leather will make the punch last longer.

However
if you are punching lots of holes, it is too tiring on the hand squeezing the
tool all the time. It is much easier to
use a hole punch that you hit with a hammer like our mini hole punch tool set
or maxi punches for round holes or our oblong hole punches for buckle
slots. However you need a sturdy solid
surface that will not bounce. That is
why you see in a lot of custom leather shops, a tree stump, as it makes an
excellent solid work bench for which to pound.
You will also need something under the leather you are punching such as
a poundo board or scrap leather to prevent the punches from becoming dull.

It is also best to use rawhide
mallets, wooden mallets or poly mallets as opposed to metal hammer
when striking punches. Metal hammers
will cause the end of your tool to
mushroom after frequent use.

These are some mentor /sifu word of advise on selection for
a proper mallet.
A mallet is a universal tool that you will need for doing
almost any style of tooling. WHY there is different size mallet head to choose
from. It size is dependence on the work size you intend to use as certain work
piece is thicker it work better with bigger mallet head. The choice of mallet
size is also dependence on your preference and your style, everyone uses them
in slightly different ways.

As with any tools it best to practice good handling to ensure the tools are sharp cutting edge. For punch set I have use end cap either make from electrical wire and strip off the rubber sleeve to protect the tip of punch set.
Update on 6th Jan 2018. Add photo to share best practice on how to protect sharp edge from damage.
For sharp pointed tip, use this type of rubber tubing. This rubber tube is for mosquito netting lining.
Cut the rubber tubing length slightly longer than the tip. This is to minimize damage to tip of tool.
For this case I source from old electrical wire and remove the unwanted wire and use as casing.
*note for extra protection to the other end of the tool I have added a small scrap leather.
For this I source a silicon tubing to protect the tool sharp edge.
Or you can source other readily available material which can protect the sharp edge of a tools.
Likewise the correct associated tools like the mallet and base material is equally important to ensure they do deserve the best handling. This will help in our project with clean cut on leather materials.
However do remember all tools have wear and tear life.

It also depend on a number of factors, base on what type and kind of project on leathercraft you have in mind. * Very important to bear in mind the type of project reflect on what type and kind of tools to purchase*
It better to start off on a small scale and buy the basic and essential tools first, rather than buy a complete and comprehensive set of tools.
This is also related to what budget you have in mind and to quickly start off at what level and type of project for leathercraft.

BASIC LEATHERWORKING TOOLS + SUPPLIES

In this video, I'm going to list off all of the leatherworking tools and supplies that I reach for and use on a regular basis.
First, I want to say that it's not necessary to buy everything I talk about today in one shopping trip. I suggest that you buy each tool as you need it and as your skills improve.
If you're an avid crafter, chances are you already have most of the items listed below.

Let's jump right in.
MARKING TOOLS
1. Clear gridded ruler. This is probably one of my most treasured craft tools of all time. I love these clear gridded rulers because the transparency makes it so easy for you to take precise measurements. It's such a simple tool, but so nice to have.
2. Scratch awl. I use this tool to mark sewing patterns right onto the leather and also to pierce little stitching holes into the leather before hand-sewing.
3. Poly mallet. This mallet is the perfect size and weight. It'll protect your tools from being damaged and it also gives minimal bounce. That's a plus!
CUTTING TOOLS
1. Self healing cutting mat. Use a self healing cutting mat when you cut leather pieces out with a rotary cutter. These self healing cutting mats are important to have. It helps protect your worktable from wear and tear.
2. Cutting board. I use this small poly cutting board when I punch holes out. It helps keep punches nice and sharp.
3. Rotary cutter. Use a rotary cutter to cut into thin leather. Thin leather can have a little bit of a stretch to it. A rotary cutter won’t tug on the leather, ensuring a nice straight line.
4. X-acto knife. An X-acto knife is great for cutting thick leather and curved pieces. The trick to cutting thick leather is to make small passes.
5. Box cutter. I also use a box cutter to cut thick leather. I feel like it’s easier on the wrist and the blade is a little bit more stable than the X-acto knife. This is my leather cutting tool of choice for larger projects.
6. Groover. I use this tool to cut little channels out. For example, if you were using thick leather to make a wallet, you would cut a little channel out in the crease area to reduce bulk. You can also cut a channel out close to the edge and place your stitches within the groove.
7. Punches. Punches are great for cutting holes in your leather. You can get these in different shapes and sizes.
STITCHING TOOLS
1. Spacer. This tool is great for spacing out and marking stitch holes. Mine came in a set of four different sizes, 5, 6, 7, and 8 holes per inch.
2. Diamond hole chisel. These diamond hole chisels are awesome for fast piercing. I’d say you could get your stitching holes pierced in half the time than when using an awl.
3. Needles. These leather sewing needles have blunted ends. You can get them in different sizes, but sizes 4 or 5 are what I use the most.
4. Pliers. Sometimes it can be difficult to pull the needle through the leather, so flat-nosed pliers come in handy.
5. Thread. They come in different sizes, colors, waxed or unwaxed... For sewing thick leather, I like to use this waxed linen thread (right) and for sewing more delicate leather I like to use this finer wax nylon thread (left). They’re both great for hand-sewing and super strong too!
6. Thread clipper. It’s nice to have a pair of thread clippers near you when you're sewing. This one’s my favorite. It fits comfortably in my hand and it’s super sharp!
7. Binder clips. Use binder clips to hold seams together. I don’t like to leave these on for too long though, because sometimes they leave indentations on your leather. Short term use is fine, but if you have to leave them on overnight, put folded paper towels underneath both sides.
8. Stitching pony. Having a stitching pony is so helpful. It holds your project for you while you hand-stitch. There's an upcoming tutorial on how to saddle-stitch. I'll show you how to use the stitching pony. Stay tuned for that.

Just to share idea on how to improve on tool used for leather craft.

I had purchase a bench press set for riveting purpose. To enable it to be more gentle on our hand. I have added a scrap piece of old discarded material and wrap around the metal handle.
This way it help to minimize pressure point on our hand during use.

Since have acquire new tools, decided to fabricate tool holder to protect the tools sharp edge and collect all similar function tools
Experiment with some "scrap" leather to use to hold tools.

They are few type and spacing available in Malaysia due to low demand.
It good for thick leather materials
Use of stitching groove to cut a drain line
Punch stitch hole along drain line
Use stitch punch tool to measure and mark line on leather for ease to punch stitch hole.
Apply a small quantity of glue on the selected mark location. This is to minimize movement when punch hole on leather.
Verify snag fitting of the tools.
Start from the second hole and loop to first hole . This method will have the thread with two loop stitch.
See below is the step by step method apply.
Double loop at start of stitch
It is done to ensure the edge where both part meet does not tear too easily.
Take note on the double stitch for the end part.
