 Key Chain #08 (Key Chain upgrade).

 One of the old key chain holder need to upgrade, as some of the feature are not functioning or not serve it purpose.

This is an old key chain holder.

There is a remote control module is no longer use. It is light on/off control module.

The veg tan leather is too soft and there is limited "Support" for key holder.

This is an end product of key holder.

With it middle pad to give support and make center layer a rigid support

The VT2 button is hidden tag version.

This is the approximate size of leather 11.5 cm x 21.5 cm.

The center piece is base on four key head.

How to fabricate tag for hiding VT2 button head.

Tools required for tag.

In this case tag is about 2 cm width and the length can be adjusted depend on the design needed.

You will notice VT2 button head should position about mid point between the layer outer edge to the cut slot line.

The 2cm straight line hole is about 2cm from the edge.

Notice certain part of surface is clean or make rough before glue is apply

This is how a strip is inserted into 2 cm hole

This is to show the strip is glue to the layer. Remember to check the correct orientation of the strip.

Once the tag is glued it is time to punch hole for stitching work.

The purpose is to ensure the tag is secured properly when user pull tag to open key chain holder. 

You will notice it this case a wooden piece is use close to it edge as the VT2 button is close by.

This is one way to verify the other button position match

Verify position before proceed to apply glue.

This step is important to check to confirm , especially the button position to allow stitching start

Insert one end of tag into a cut slot line

Pull the end into position

Apply glue 

Allow glue to dry

Key Chain #01

New design key chain holder.

This new design is base on Pinterest web site.


Note:- Previous key chain project, dated 4th July 2018 , of similar type and design.

Add a simple leather strip attached to
key ring to make it easier to retrieve key.

This was done as a gift for one relative from Hong Kong.

End product of project.

This design have the base leather offset from the edge. It also use a softer leather (Cow Veg Tan belly). The strap use a thicker leather which is about the same thickness of the key ring.

Use a scrap leather to raise height
when cut "drain" line. This to minimize
uneven pressure at edge.

Use bamboo chop stick to hold soft leather edge ,make it easier for burnishing work.

Use S/S ruler and insert in between leather piece. To allow us to concentrate on other side to attach leather piece first.

Was trying different way to make key chain case that is practical and ease of use base on each individual user needs and requirement. * of course some special request and customization to match individual needs and requirement *.

There are four post key ring version and six post key ring version to suit needs of each person usage and daily needs.
There are different way to make key chain case and different locking button method to suit each individual needs.

Share some challenge to make a key chain case and it might look simple at first look. But need a certain skill set and knowhow to assemble them in certain sequence.

This is another key chain design (saw this design from Pinterest) and modify the design slightly and tried out different approach.

This is the result is after trying out the using VT2 button (inner buttoning using rivet and short leather to extend the button) and VT5 button style to better secure the key chain.

A typical key chain case is just to hold key within it casing. Have added other feather like a hook for certain use it handy to able to carry around. There are other possibility like add credit card or access card space.
There is unlimited combination you can think off for key chain holder design.

Tools for fabricate tag for key chain with a hook (from left to right)

    1) Thread sniper

    2) Hobby knife

    3) Marker pen

    4) Coin
    5) Leather Glue

Leather of suitable thickness and size typically 2 cm width and length is about 5 cm.

Use coin for cutting curve line edge

How to terminate thread by hiding in between the layer and trim off the thread close to edge.

Trim the excess thread and keep it as close to the leather edge to "hide" the thread end in between the two leather space.

Cut a slotted line to accommodate the strip of tag

Insert the strip of leather with pre configured button.

Use a clamp to position and hold the tag in place for the next process.

Apply small amount of glue to fix position of tag to surface.






A small amount
of glue will make life easier do punch hole for stitching work.

Update on 13th Jan 2018 - Key Chain holder.
In this showing method and tools used to make a hook for key chain holder.

 Tips when cutting leather which is thick, insert a small piece at underneath one end of ruler. It give a better support as the hand apply pressure on ruler.













Use of paper template to mark on leather. Use a 20 cent coin for the curve part.

Position coin and use hobby knife to cut outline.

Update 27th Jan 2018.
     Try new FOB key chain with hook.

Cut leather material to size. Typical width is about 2 cm for this size hook. The other piece is for band.
* the band strip need to carefully measure by wrapping around and mark to size.
