Leather Tools and Tips #3

This still in experimenting stage for stitching pony project.

It is to improve the stitching pony design on a clamping device attached in between the clamping plate. There are several design for clamping device which they have pro and con.

Material list for clamping device for stitching pony (“spoked nut” fits in between clamp face jaw)
This design is unique is that it have no high point to minimize thread or lace to get hook or get entangle.
If the project is big hence longer thread are required . This have higher tendency for the thread loop to entangle, which this design is trying to minimize.

1) SUS Socket Head cap screw – M10 x 50mm (approx. 2 inch)
2) SUS Hexagon bolt – M10 x 50mm (approx. 2 inch)
3) SUS Nuts – M10
4) SUS flat washer – M10
5) PVC pipe 13mm (½ inch) cut to length of 6 cm ( 2.5 inch)

Work in progress .... thank you for taking time to view this project. πŸ‘‚

Another interesting point is there a number of design for clamping device and each have the PRO and CON.

There are several clamp design type in market.

a) quick release bolts you have on bicycles

Pro – simple clamp action and fast and easy to operate.
CON- handle can get thread entangle
Insufficient gap the stroke of the bicycle bolt is too short.
The jaws of the stitching pony won´t open enough to be useful..
Lace or thread will catch on the handle

clamping device

b) Wing Nut
Pro - Simple to make and cheap
CON - a) The whole thing rotated when you tried to tighten it.
            b) The wing itself was to small and kept hurting fingers.
            c) Wing nut can get thread entanglement.

c) Toggle Clamp
Pro - Fast to clamp on and release.
CON -  a) Possible thread get entanglement.
             b) cost price for device.

d) Knob type

Pro - Simple turn knob, minimize thread entanglement.
CON - Tension need time to turn.

Update on 22nd Nov 2018.

These are tips from expert for workaround to minimize thread entanglement on stitching pony tool knob or wing nut.

Add leather strap to cover
knob. To minimize
thread entanglement

Attached a leather strap
at bottom of knob

Plastic cup to cover knob/wing nut

Stitching Pony Belt

This a stitching pony for belt project.

Another project today is for belt project, it is long wooden piece to hold the belt when doing stitching.

The real challenge was to drill hole to
accommodate the JS clamp device.

Stitching Pony Stand

                3rd version Stitching Pony project

This is another project on stitching pony stand version (third version).

One side of wooden plank to hold a JS clamp mounting and the base mounting.
Drill hole is for jig saw to cut a slotted line. This is to allow the JS clamp handle to pass thru.

Use a bench tool top to grip project . This make it easier to drill hole for screw.
 Side view of project

Prepare to attached a leather to jig (jaw of the pony stitching).

testing new pony stitching tool

Update on 8th Nov 2018

Just to share the first version of pony stitching tool.
It is a very basic tool about 60 cm height and jaw size of about 10 cm, but the material use is weak ply wood and it is basic screw to hold the two piece ply wood.
First version of pony stitching tool.

Side view, note the three hole for different height
