Non Leather Project # 6 (Gait Belt) Updated on 24th June

   This is an interesting project which I saw at Lam Wah Ee of phyiso department was using to help patient recovery.

Certain patient need this gait belt to assist them during their daily physio activity such as aid to balance and walk with another person close by holding the gait belt.

There are numerous design of gait belt to suit each individual needs and requirement due to their disability or weakness.

This is own version of gait belt using veg tan leather, foam PU, Velcro tape and other like rope. This is the end product

Need to study the current patient needs and do some basic measurement before begin project

1) the hand width is approximately 10 cm to 12 cm.
2) Waist length is approximately 118 cm to 130 cm depend on waist line of patient.
3) Number of handle point to added to the gait belt is depend of your need and patient needs. Best interview care giver and patient to acquire better inform and measurement.
4) Type of latching method, button fastener, or velcro or other alternative is also have to be decided.
5) Padding material for more comfort to end user which is the patient. Check are they allergic to certain fabric or leather.
6) It recommend to be careful because of needs and suitability of the gait belt, we have to take into basic needs, it might good to interview physio department personnel to get feedback base on their usage and experience and purpose.
7) Still learning from other expert on the Gait Belt design and what to looks out in better design.

Update on 8th Feb 2019.

This beside the gait belt my relative is request but she ask to look into her case. I say will check around for idea and solution.

Another challenge for wheel chair user, it does not have place to hang the urine bag in this case relative is wheel chair user but have use a recycle to carry the urine bag on wheel chair.
SO I took picture of the wheel chair and study what option or location is suitable to hang the urine bag and it tubing attached.

Fabricate the handle part.







Apply glue to rope

Estimate the circumference of the rope diameter use in this is about 4 cm


Estimate the tubular handle size base on your hand size and in close position as shown


Cut long strip of veg tan leather as waist size is about 90 cm to 120 cm.
Use long straight ruler or in this case is aluminum "L" bracket of sufficient thickness, best to check first before use.
