Was thinking of making small leather gift and started surf thru Pinterest site for simple design idea and easy to do step.
Saw a simple design for pencil case. To start off, to create a paper template and transfer to cardboard.
* normal practice is to use paper template to verify design and do a simple check is the end product is practical and "workable".
Materials and tool for pencil case project |
Step #2 Draw line use leather marker pen and mark hole to punch for VT5 button
Step #3 Cutting leather according to outline drawn from template
Tips #01- Cutting a rectangular portion of leather with sharp corner. When using rotary cutter there is limitation hence it better to cut a portion from one corner using a craft knife.
Step #4 where the edge of the leather is trim off with drain knife cutter.
Step #5 to trim a round edge using a 20cts coin to get better curve shape
Step #6 using tool to punch VT5 button hole.
Step #7 showing punch tool to hold the "male" VT5 button accessories and sharing tools use for this project.
Step# 8 How to prepare leather piece to punch hole along edge and use metal clamp to hold and align two leather together, refer to tips #02. It recommend to use a marker tool to draw line for alignment of hole punch work easier.
Step# 9 Use punch hole along the drawn line. Since the material is too thick we make mark on second layer and punch hole with puncher. * to prevent damage to tools, sharp edge of punch hole device it better to have a layer underneath like hard wood or 2mm thick polyurethane plastic sheet.
Step #10 use of cigarette lighter to terminate a wax thread. It is recommend to trim wax thread for a sufficient length to ensure good size ball by cigarette lighter heat. !! Be careful not to be too close as it might damage your stitches and watch your finger and hand. Preferable to use lighter with adjustable flame size to minimize damage.
Tips #02 use of mini metal clamp with paper underneath to prevent dent mark from clamp contact surface.
Tips #03 (Left side) use of four puncher for stitching .(Right side) method use to start stitching with two colour thread,
Compare the different way to stitch and use combination of colour wax thread.
* note:- what is VT5 snap on button/fastener?
It is device use for this project to hold two part together. Attached image of a sample on VT5 snap on button/fastener, to view in greater details and proper name for each part.
** note:- you will need a hole puncher and riveter or punch set for each type,
*** note:- for demo on how to fix these snap on button you can watch this YouTube demo title - Snap Fastener Installation Tool Demo ,url link = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlRwHwo6eW8
Interesting and professional guide on snap on fastener ( Published on 9 May 2011 ).
From YouTube, title is Setting Snap Fasteners - url link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwBNL6lluLM
This guy is a professional tutor and guide.
You will notice the tool type use and the base material when
making hole and setting snap on button. Best practice is try to use correct
tool to prolong your leathercraft tool and also minimize damage to it.
I have seen some demo using incorrect way and tool to punch
hole and riveter. One example it is not recommend a metal hammer to strike the
hole puncher it better to buy a mallet with plastic or harden rubber head or teflon material.

The diamond punch tool is design to “cut” into leather clean

Be aware not to “accidentally“ drop this tool as it is brittle
and break easily or it sharp end tip will get blunt.

Small leather |
Sharing best practice on stitching thread for small leather project
using “expensive” thread which is wax coated with characteristic of being strong and
durable materials.
This is one
simple tips to minimize wastage on thread for "SMALL" leather on
stitching. Note:- Save costing is best done as one roll of GALACES S020 0.6mm (approx. length??) is RM25.00.
The approximate
length of thread to cut for a simple and small project as a general guide only.
As for this project
the leather wide is approximate 2 cm and the recommend thread to cut is about 14-15 cm. The stitch punch type ,hole spacing is about 3 cm for stitching..
*Note #1 for
bigger project the guide is slightly different for thread length to cut and not
appropriate to apply in this situation.*
** Note #2
Other factor to consider a) is the pattern type for stitching also need to take
into consideration. b) Hole spacing punch on leather is also need to take into
consideration too.
*** Note #3 it best consider using the correct size needle and type for this application. Previously I was using a much bigger needle size for a small thread size 0.6mm. This result in difficulty to make stitches and end up wasting time, the needle encounter wastage in thread , safety issue as need great strength to perform work.

Tried the above project and did encounter some challenges.
1) The cutting on corner take longer to shape as both piece need to align them during the process.
2) As for punching hole along edge for stitching face some difficulty if the leather is too thick.
3) Tried to cut off groove for stitching on some leather surface encounter uneven groove. It looks like if against the grain it is not so smooth operation.

Share on another simpler design sunglass case. Template is available upon request.
=======================++++++++++++++=====================
Update 12th Feb 2018.
Some idea on sun glass casing with some simple tips and method to use.
Template for backing layer inside sun glass casing. There is two portion to fabricate to match and give some support to the leather for firmness to casing.
* note:- since not all cutting match the template it recommend to check the actual contour for the backing layer and align before guling on leather. At time it might need to fine tune the edge contour to match the stitching hole punch along the edge.
* When applying glue on leather side and backing layer ensure it have sufficient time for the gule to set before attaching them together.
Next step as follows.
Allow sufficient time for glue to be ready before attach the two part together. Apply slight pressure for both parts to achieve better adhesion.
This is to provide and get better and good adhesion strength between the backing layer and leather inner side.
Use this wooden tool to help spread and apply good adhesion between both layer.
Take note the beginning portion have two loop to start off. Using saddle stitching method to hold both edge.
After complete the stitch check the project as the whole.
Prepare marking for the flap where a velcro material are to be position and place on.
Overall rear view of the project.
Next step is how to attached velcro material to hold the flap.
* Tips, use a rubber tube to minimize injury to finger during sewing. As the leather and velcro are tough material to sew.
Use awl to make hole for easier sewing.
To cover up visible thread have gule a small patch over the thread.
Use marker pen to make mark position for better spacing when sewing velcro material.

This what the end product looks like from front view.
