Non Leather Project #5 (Key Chain)

         This is non leather repair work.
Encounter problem with key chain design that need improvement after using it. The issue here is the key keeps dropping out.

Hence decided to add a small flag to minimize key from dropping out

Use this type of tool (lock stitch sewing awl) for simple repair work. Trying it out this for the first time.

👀*note:- it is available on line or can be purchase from a local leather shop in Penang.

 This is how to assemble the various part from the kit supplied part.

✌*note:- you will need a stitching awl to help in repair. It make life easier when you start repair work.

Install spool of thread for Lock stitch sewing awl.

*note:- the thread supplied when new with spool are available to purchase. But once the thread is finish you if could either buy a new spool come complete with thread (limited colour thread).
However you can easier and cheaper to refill the empty spool.


After insert one end thread from spool thru the head tunnel and thru the needle, Note this needle have a special groove channel for needle point.

This is how the thread is pass thru and once tighten the head nut we are ready to use it.

Show how a loop is created when
the needle is pull away movement.

This is how the thread loop is created and insert another thread  and continue from here onward.

This is how leather is pre punch hole in preparation for Lock stitch sewing awl.

Coin purse #6 (Request)

 Another request from relative for a simple coin purse.


This is the first version tried out and it certainly usage is very dependent on individual needs and requirement. This is done after consulting face to face with end user what is their needs.

Does not need any credit card holder / slot, just for keep small change and dollar notes. However prefer to have a button to keep it close.
It mean to retain the two button type to latch close.

New coin purse design , two pocket for notes.

Add "trade mark" label on one pocket

Add two button position about 1.5 cm by 1.5 cm from edge.

Burnish the edge

This how the "trade mark" is install into one of the pocket.

Tips:- it will be better to burnish the edge of the pocket before stitching is done.

Cut all material with reference to
base layer size.

Encounter some challenge as leather property changes as we cut them, how we punch hole, how we handle them during the process of applying gule.
When we handle the edge during the attachment between layer. As it is normal for leather changes slight in shape.

Note:- it is essential the knife is sharpen before use. It is very crucial and important step for better clean edge.

Tips:- it will be better to start cutting from the centre of the curve shape.

However it is depend on individual preference and style.

Which method suit each personal preference and best work for them

Cut curve shape direct with the aid of template

Cut a straight line perpendicular to edge.

Tips:- for certain soft leather it better to cut from one end.

Continue cut straight line from the other end

Then continue to cut from the other end of edge and meet at about center.It help to minimize leather material movement when use one direction cut.




When cutting thicker leather is better to goes over several cutting stroke

Cut curved line for edge

Tote Bag #3 Part One (Kid bag)

              Making a kid tote bag for granddaughter.

First measure the handle length on kid (Use a string to measure shoulder to elbow), it is approx 53 cm.

6 cm width strip for handle of tote bag.

Buy a 6-8 mm diameter nylon rope to fabricate handle.

Measure the rope circumference to determine
leather width to trim.

An idea come into mind, was to make this style and shape bag and attached with handle at both side.

Still thinking a better way to make a simple bag with handle to attached.

I have been asked to explain in a bit of detail how to make a rolled handle, I have an opportunity to do a rolled loop and up to a point, the process is the same.
You can adjust the length or diameter of the handle to suit your needs, but the process remains the same.
I thought it better to add something rather than leave it till I get a chance for a rolled handle video. I hope it helps a little.

Leather Tools and Tips #8

         Need to protect the sharp edge tool...

Since most of the project uses the sharp edge for better cutting and clean edge is required. It best to protect the sharp cutting edge.

These are some ways to protect the tool cutting edge.

Thread cutter, prepare material for this tool.

Two version of sheath for thread cutter

Wrap knife with plastic sheet to use wet leather method.

Round punch hole and oblong punch hole tool.
All these project uses scrap leather odd and end piece.

Belt Key Holder

  Trying a belt key holder, saw this project base on Pinterest sample.

Try this new project belt key holder.
It is simple project worthwhile to
fabricate.

Two portion, inner layer added a
thin leather to protect belt abrasion

 To minimize abrasion on user belt

Another version for belt key holder.

Top project which is cheaper and simpler alternative for belt key holder

Bottom right is a belt key holder but uses a snap on brace clip mechanism.

Bottom left is a first version of belt key holder but incomplete project as the leather was not cut properly and have many defect.
