Simple pouch

SIMPLE POUCH #1 design

Trying new way of doing stitching for a simple pouch. It is a multiple purpose project using the softer leather material. User can keep their money, store car key and accessories or for certain small mobile phone design.

Verify leather material thickness, it important for correct thickness for use with box stitching.

If too thin (less than 1 mm) it very challenging to do box stitching due to limited thickness punch thread hole with awl.
If too thin there is possible weakness on strength of project.
As the thread is to whole the two edge together.

Estimate length in this project is about 25 cm. You can try longer than 25 cm is possible to meet your need, hence in this design it best cut at 25 cm.
If not mistaken the leather is " crazy horse" type.

It is better to burnish all edge before you proceed to next step.
As it will look neat when finish box stitch.

Do take note to add VT2 button (stud and post) on front side first before stitching (for using press machine to set button). Or unless you have a manual punch for VT2 it can be installed at any time.

A snap fastener (also called press stud, dome fastener, popper, snap or tich) is a pair of interlocking discs, made out of a metal or plastic, commonly used in place of traditional buttons to fasten clothing and for similar purposes.

Draw line in preparation for punch hole mark only, then use the mark position and use awl to piece at angle.
This done for both facing edge.

This is how it is done.

This is how I box stitch to minimize the thread punch thru other thread during stitching process.

One advantage of this box stitching is the pouch is looks and feel wider as the edge are facing each other.
Other stitch method there is a seam allowance to take care. This result in the pouch is slightly narrower.

View of the finish project
View with flap open, the button apply is VT2 type.

This simple pouch can be use to keep money or small mobile phone and etc.

Take note, the button is installed direct to the front, where the post is facing the flesh side.
While stud (sometimes referred to as the ball, is the male component of the snap) is facing outside.

In this case the metal part surface of the post is not covered and it could pose issue for sensitive part can be scratch.

Hence other simple pouch design #2 and #3 have different to overcome this issue.
Rear view of project.

Inside top view of project with flap open.

You notice the side edge is not restrict and hence
the inside pocket look wider.
Compare with saddle stitching the seam at edge occupy certain space and make slightly smaller.

Close up view on the edge.

SIMPLE POUCH #2 design

Update 1 st Dec 2021.

Cut top front edge using round template to create a curve cut line.
It better to burnish this edge after cutting the edge.

Apply burnishing cream to all edge.
Some of the tools required for this project.
In this case I have VT5 button installed on a small strip of leather. The white layer is an interface material to give firmer support to VT5 button.

You have notice it have pre-punch stitching hole before glue to front layer. Since it quite thick when bonded on front layer. Notice is easier to picking iron tool which have pre punch hole.

Punch hole thru the front layer and notice it better this way but extra work.

Note the stitching have a loop to secure both edge, then two stitch space follow by a loop.
The loop is on alternate left and right needle is to ensure they are even thread length when it completed.

Hence in this case the thread length is cut to accommodate this additional loop.
Pre punch hole along edge of logo piece.
Outside view with round logo facing outside.
For alignment purpose a thread is temporary stitch to hold both layer in position.

Once the desire position is fix, use marker to confirm position and alignment.
Verify the VT5 cap and snap are in line to the post position.
USe ruler to check for position required.

Once confirm can start punch hole with awl.

Stitch the flap round part with stitching pony.

View with the flap part open position.

The flap is sandwich by both round layer to conceal the VT5 cap and socket.

The inner round layer is plain while the outer round is emboss with logo.

Overall view of a finish project.

The inner round layer is plain while the outer round is emboss with logo.

Non leather repair- jean trouser

This an interesting non leather repair- jean trouser.

Noted the jean trouser have torn area at bottom .

A torn jean close to the edge. This jean a few repair done recently as can be seen.

Since this repair need different approach due the nature of this defect with big "hole" gap.

Sew an interface material close to the edge of the trouser.
This material is to give greater support to repair as the torn area is quite big gap or space.

Sew a piece of interface material to get support to the edge first.

From underneath use a needle and thread to close the torn gap.

It is better to sew behind so it not so obvious , as after this the interface material is cover over.

Once the torn area is closer together, sew the torn area several time. Recommend use the zig zap pattern to strengthen the torn area.

This repair is on the pocket where the edge is frail just use needle and thread to loop over. A straight forward simple repair.

This is one way to repair a torn jean trouser pocket edge. As sewing machine do not have this function.

Before and after repair.

After repair done

Close up view on repair area.

Note this wear and tear is more obvious at foot heel section.

It is very high contact to the shoe heel.

Ripped Jeans Hole Patch-up *invasive alteration*
24 Aug 2019 Downtown Tailoring (11:37 minutes)

In today's video. The client has a massive rip in their jeans, so I am showing you the process of how I create a durable patch. The jeans actually belonged to my daughter so I had the freedom to use a different colour for the bottom part so you can get a better idea of how it looks. As mentioned in the video, you want to find another jean of the exact same colour and it is as if nothing ever happened!

Small project for friend

A friend who wanted a leather cash pouch. The original pouch was a non leather material the size was a bit wide, so request to customize to match his needs.

Original pouch use was this design, it is non leather material (like coconut fabric material).

The original design was 25 cm x 10 cm size, it is slightly wider for Malaysia ringgit note of nomination RM50.

This a completed project and it is slightly smaller but can fit a Malaysian ringgit RM 50.00 note.

Check on thickness of original leather is about 2.3 mm

Do take note on small print to shows area which need skiving.
Certain area need skiving to overcome the original thickness which make it difficult to fold and looks too bulky.
Example the top flap and front facing edge, will recommend to skive as thin as possible.

Tips :- method to fold flap edge please to this link.

Use clip to fold flap in place. Try to add water along the flap fold line on the inside flesh side.

It takes time for flap to lie flat, as user did not request for button or other fastening device to project.

Rear view of project

Note:- since this leather material is not flexible it is quite challenging to make this project using this leather property. Even to burnish with chemical is that straight forward, it take several attempt but the result is limited.

Update 2nd Dec 2021

= = = = = = = Pen holder stand = = = = = = =  update on 26th Nov 2021

A request to make a three pen holder from a friend.

The first version use a standard edge stitching and the result is not satisfactory in term of shape and end result is try out the box stitching method.

Punch hole from the flesh side, it better to punch as close to the edge about 2.3 mm. This is depend on the thickness of leather use

Burnishing the round cut hole with "ledafil" chemical to bind the fibre edge when rub with burnishing wooden tool.

It need several coat as this leather property

To ensure it is clean punch round line, check the flesh side.

It easier to draw guide circle line to better view and check punch in correct position.

Tools used for this project

In this case the round punch use is 20 mm diameter.

Use ruler to draw line in preparation punch hole.
tools to draw line before punch hole and line up side by side to align punch hole.

Use awl to punch hole along the edge at an angle.

This is to show the awl pierce thru at an angle for box stitching. As the leather is thick and tough it takes time to execute slowly.

Use the punch to check on position to insert awl  .

Tips:- it help to track and position are in alignment when punch hole with awl tool.
Start the box stitching.

*Do take note the way to start stitching the needle position is not the same per saddle stitching needle position.

TWO New Stitches to Elevate your Leathercraft!

We usually use the Saddle Stitch on every leathercraft project we make, but there are some different stitch methods you can use to open you craft up to many new shapes! In this video we make a leather pen cup using two of these stitches - the Butt Joint and the Box Joint. These stitches allow you to make 3 dimensional leathercraft projects by joining the leather at right angles or totally flat with no overlap. They take a bit of time to master, but once you've got them down they're totally worth it!
