Today (26th Feb 2021) is a very special day for Chinese community ...
Chap Goh Mei marks the end of the Chinese New Year celebrations. Observed annually on the fifteenth night of Chinese New Year,
There are many legends about the traditions and celebrations of Chap Goh Mei.
According to folklore, during ancient times, young girls were forbidden to go out except on Chap Goh Mei when they could visit temples accompanied by their maids. For the guys, it is the chance for them to catch a glimpse of these lovely maidens. This explains why Chap Goh Mei is also regarded as the Chinese Valentine’s Day.
On the night of Chap Goh Mei, unmarried girls will throw tangerines (oranges) in the sea or river in the belief that they will be able to marry good husbands. But now time have change ,there are contest where the guys will try collect oranges from lake or sea side thrown by the maiden .. but this trend is fading and are less of such event. Due to current pandemic situation it is scale down or other might have creative idea to revise this celebration in a different form to suit the younger generation.
